Fridge freezer broken? Here’s what to do and how you can get a new one

August 4, 2026 • Fair for You

Fair for You can help you spread the cost of a new fridge-freezer - whether your old one broke down, you've moved house, or it's time for an upgrade

We know it can be difficult to afford the up-front costs of a new appliance. And we know that living without a fridge-freezer isn't something you want to have to do for long.

With a Fair for You Shopping Card loan, you can borrow £50 to £350 on a prepaid Mastercard. This can be used to shop with our retail partners including Currys, Euronics, Argos and more.

Or you can get a loan specifically to buy the new appliance. Browse our range of fridges, freezers and fridge freezers. This loan comes with free UK delivery, and free removal of your old appliance - plus free installation in many cases.

What should I do if I think my fridge freezer is broken?

If you think your fridge freezer is broken, it’s good to try these things before you order a new one:

-        Check it is plugged in properly. You could check that the plug socket still works (ie by testing a phone charger or something else on it)

-        Unplug the fridge for about 5–10 minutes, then try restarting it.

-        Check that the temperature dial hasn’t been changed accidentally

-        Check that you haven’t accidentally left it open overnight or for a long period – even leaving it slightly open could cause it to warm up quickly

If you’ve got food in there which you don’t want to lose, try to avoid opening and closing it too much, because this lets the cool air escape. The food in the fridge will stay cool for a few hours. If the freezer is full, it might stay cold for up to two days.

Once you are certain you need a new appliance (bad luck!), then measure your old one and the space it sits in, to make sure you get a replacement the right size.

You should also find a serial or model number on a sticker inside the fridge freezer. You might find that the same model is still available – or that giving this information to a retailer will help them find the right replacement.

Can I get a fridge freezer on finance with bad credit?

We carry out credit checks as part of every application. But we look at more than just your credit history.

If you apply for a Fair for You loan for an appliance or for our Shopping Card loan, we will focus on how you're repaying things at the time of your application, alongside your credit history. Because of this, we may be able to consider lending to people with bad credit scores.

We can't guarantee your application will be approved - but a bad credit score alone won't necessarily rule you out.

What fridge freezers can I get through Fair for You?

There are two main ways to spread the cost of a new fridge freezer through Fair for You, choose the one that  works best for you.

Option 1: Buy direct through Fair for You - with free delivery and removal

Fair for You offers a range of fridge freezers, fridges and freezers from trusted brands including Hotpoint and Indesit. Whether you need an American-style fridge freezer, a standard freestanding model or a smaller under-counter freezer, there are options to suit different family sizes, kitchen layouts and budgets.

When you buy direct with a Fair for You loan:

  • You get free delivery across the UK
  • With many products, we provide free installation, and we'll remove your old appliance for free
  • You choose how you repay - weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly or monthly

Browse our range to see what's available.

Option 2: Use the Fair for You Shopping Card loan

With our Shopping Card loan, you can borrow from £50 up to £350 on a prepaid Mastercard, to spend in-store or online at a range of high-street retailers - including Argos, Euronics and Currys, all of which stock a wide range of fridge freezers.

You pay using your Shopping Card loan at checkout (online or in-store) the same way as you would with any card.

An important thing to remember is that your repayments aren't linked to your spending - you’ll start repaying the loan amount regardless of when you use the card itself. Repayment dates and frequency are chosen by you -  whether that’s weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly or monthly basis.

This is a good option if you want to shop at a retailer you already know, or if you'd like to browse in-store before buying - and it means you can take advantage of any sales or discounts they are offering.

Which option is right for me?

  • If your fridge freezer has just broken down and you need a replacement quickly, buying direct from Fair for You means you get free delivery and your old appliance removed - all in one.
  • If the model you want costs £350 or less and you'd prefer to shop at our partner retailers, the Shopping Card loan works well. You may also be able to get the appliance delivered quickly.
  • If you're replacing a larger or more expensive model, buying direct from Fair for You gives you more flexibility on the amount you can borrow. If you have a Shopping Card loan, and the balance is less than the cost of your purchase, you can also use your loan as part payment in-store - as long as you have the rest of the money to pay up front. You could also pay off one third of your loan and then top-up again.
  • As an ethical lender, we want what is best for customers, and recommend you search around and look for a good deal. But remember that other lenders might give you different repayment flexibility, eligibility criteria and costs (including Annual Percentage Rate or  APR), so you need to weigh up the pros and cons. Remember that unlike rent-to-own stores like Brighthouse, you own the appliance outright.

How much does it cost to spread the cost of a fridge freezer?

Both options carry a fixed interest rate of 4.25% per month. The Shopping Card loan lets you borrow up to £350.

What this means is that if you take out a £350 loan, and pay off weekly, you’ll pay 20 payments of £19.36. This means you’ll pay £387.20 in total - the initial loan amount, plus £37.20 in interest.

Use our loan calculator to get an idea of what your repayments might look like before you apply.

With Fair for You loans, you have the flexibility to change your payment frequency or payment plan if you need, and you can make extra payments, with no penalty.

If you're dealing with debt or money worries more broadly, our Debt & Money Matters page has support and resources to help.

Fair for You loans are subject to eligibility and affordability checks. Missed payments may affect your credit file. Only borrow what you can afford to repay. Loan interest example is based on current APR, correct at time of publication.
